The GDP for the Middle East region stands at $2.246 trillion dollars a year. A large proportion of this income is derived from crude oil production and its derivatives. i.e. refining, chemical and pharmaceutical. Crude oil accounts for 35% or 21.76 million barrels a day of the worlds total oil production and the region holds 65% of the worlds oil reserves

Covering some five million square kilometres, with borders in three continents and sixteen countries, home to three religions - Islam, Judaism and Orthodox Christianity - the Middle East has been fundamental in shaping the world as we know it.

Throughout its turbulent history, where civilisations can be traced back as far as 3000 BCE, the Middle East has always been an area of great importance.

Situated between Africa, Asia and Europe it held, and still holds a strategic position being a gateway to India and the far East. The silk route which threaded its way from China via the Middle East to the Mediterranean, brought with it goods such as paper, silk and gunpowder from China, spices and gemstones from India, byzantine cloth and silver goods from Iran. The Suez canal opened in 1869 and provided a direct link between the Mediterranean and Red sea thus avoiding the perilous trip around Africa.

These trade routes were fundamental in the exchange of ideas that brought us inventions that have radically shaped our lives. Examples of discoveries that have been traced to the region are the invention of algebra, agricultural methods such as ploughing, domestication of animals, cities, metallurgy, the wheel, glass, counting, writing, the Arabic alphabet, beer, candles,wine and even the first vending machine was invented here in 100-200 BCE.

Over the centuries the boundaries have constantly shifted as the many different empires -beautifully illustrated in the map above- have come and gone. At present the Middle East is made up of; Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait,Lebanon, Oman, Palestine Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

Its main wealth today is derived from oil production which accounts for 35% of the worlds supply and 65% of the world reserves. Other industries include petrochemical, agriculture, minerals and finance.
